installation issues
This page covers common problems when installing or launching twig on macOS.
"twig can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer"
macOS Gatekeeper blocks apps not from the App Store or identified developers.
solution
- Right-click (or control-click) on twig in your Applications folder
- Select "open" from the context menu
- In the dialog, click "open"
This only needs to be done once. Future launches will work normally.
alternative: system preferences
- Go to system preferences > security & privacy > general
- You should see a message about twig being blocked
- Click "open anyway"
- Confirm in the dialog
"twig is damaged and can't be opened"
This usually means the app was quarantined during download.
solution
Remove the quarantine attribute:
- Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
- Run this command:
xattr -cr /Applications/Twig.app - Try opening twig again
permission errors
Twig needs permission to access files on your system.
disk access
If twig can't read your project files:
- Go to system preferences > security & privacy > privacy
- Select "files and folders" or "full disk access"
- Click the lock to make changes
- Add twig or enable its access
- Restart twig
downloads folder
If you can't open projects from downloads:
- Move your project to your home folder or documents
- Or grant twig access to the downloads folder in privacy settings
twig won't start
If twig doesn't open at all:
check activity monitor
- Open Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities)
- Search for "twig"
- If it's running but not showing, select it and click the X to quit
- Try opening again
check for multiple instances
Only one instance of twig should run at a time. If you see multiple:
- Quit all instances via Activity Monitor
- Relaunch twig
check disk space
Twig needs a few hundred MB of free space to run. Check your available storage:
- Click the Apple menu > about this Mac
- Select storage
- Ensure you have free space
dmg won't mount
If the downloaded DMG file won't open:
re-download
The download may be corrupted:
- Delete the downloaded file
- Download again from GitHub releases
- Try mounting the new file
check the file
Verify the download completed:
- Right-click the DMG file > get info
- Check the file size (should be ~123MB)
- If smaller, the download was incomplete
m1/m2/m3 compatibility
Twig currently requires Apple Silicon:
- Supported: M1, M2, M3, and newer Apple Silicon Macs
- Not supported: Intel-based Macs
To check your Mac:
- Apple menu > about this Mac
- Look for "chip" - it should say M1, M2, M3, etc.
Intel Mac support is planned for future releases.
still stuck?
If none of these solutions work:
- Check GitHub issues for similar problems
- Create a new issue with details about what you've tried
- Include your macOS version and any error messages
